A New Teacher's Home
Teacher salaries in Uganda are paid by the government but it was difficult to attract certified teachers to such a remote area on salary alone. As a result, sometimes local villagers who had attained an 8th grade education were recruited to teach kindergarten classes. And because the rural school is so difficult to reach during the rainy season, it was discovered that the headmaster sometimes resorted to sleeping on his office floor.
In order to attract more qualified teachers to the Kayenje Primary School, it was decided to renovate a group home into a Teacher’s Home that would house four teachers and their families. With the help of Faith Christian Center and George Davis Ministries in Jacksonville, Florida, a simple eight room building was constructed and includes an outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Teachers and their families are each assigned two rooms. This wonderful new structure has become an excellent incentive for attracting qualified teachers to the village.
